Help the Alao Girls Stay in School
Help the Alao Girls Stay in School
Girls Education and Empowerment
The two classrooms at Alao Primary School in Northern Uganda lost their rooves during a hailstorm in 2021. ACWPS partnered with eleven Alao Girls, “the Roofraisers,” to help get back to school and avoid early marriage and sexual violence–an all too common fate for girls who drop out. This is the only public school for 1500 students. Thanks to ACWPS donors, we put the roof back on one of the two classrooms and the girls and their classmates went back to school in January 2022 after two years. But there is no room for desks or teachers. The second building must be completely rebuilt. Please be generous and let’s keep this project going!
URGENCY of this project:
When girls are out of school in N. Uganda, they are subject to early marriage and sexual violence;
A 2021 report found that 23,000 girls between 12 and 18 presented pregnant at local clinics in this region since the schools were destroyed;
The children are back in the classroom, but there is no room for books – or teachers! The second classroom is badly damaged and needs rebuilding;
The government has no plans to repair this school, or the other 50+ schools in the region. ACWPS is working to find partners for the other schools as well;
The community depends upon schooling their children to lift themselves out of poverty and to build peace after a generation of war in the region;
This campaign is led by girls and benefits boys and girls equally. We helped put more than 700 girls and 700 boys back in school with the help of ACWPS donors!
